Obituary for Lamar Denton

Blacksburg - Lamar Denton, 92, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Brookdale Spring Arbor in Rock Hill, SC surrounded by his family. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Gordon Mortuary Chapel, Blacksburg, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 pm. Interment will be at Frederick Memorial Gardens, Gaffney, SC.

Born in Blacksburg, SC on November 20, 1926, Mr. Denton was a son of Frank and Dovie Barnette Denton. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary Frances Hardin Denton.

Lamar proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy during WWII. He saw action in the Pacific Theater which included the Liberation of the Philippines and the Occupation of Japan.

He retired from Duke Energy after 35 years of service. He served his community as a member of the Blacksburg Fire Department for 65 years. Lamar was a life member of the VFW Post 4941 and the American Legion.

As a member of First Baptist Church of Blacksburg, he was a former deacon and Sunday School Secretary of the Church. Mr. Denton is survived by his son, Francis Lamar (Frank) Denton and wife, Linda, of York, SC; his three grandchildren, Meredith Denton Farias and husband, Juan, of New York City, NY, Alex Denton and wife, Courtney, of Rock Hill, SC, and Allison Denton McMeans and husband, Jeff, of Troutville, VA; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Denton Kirby of Gaffney, SC and numerous nieces and nephews.
